A former extractive pit of probably post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 as an earthwork on the west-facing slopes of the Otter Valley, east of Yard Cross, Upottery Parish.
The pit is roughly oval in shape and measures up to circa 35 metres across and 16 metres wide. No quarry or extractive pit was depicted in this precise location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map, supporting the interpretation that the pit had passed out of use prior to the early 19th century. However, a number of old clay pits are depicted less than 200 metres to the north, supporting the suggestion of a similar function for this earthwork. This is probably one of the numerous pits alluded to in record MDV114110.
