Summary
Possible extraction pits of between post- medieval to 19th century date are visible as earthwork pits on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, on west facing slopes within Claypits Covert. They are located in an area where numerous similar such features have been recorded during this survey and from a walkover survey carried out in 2016 (MDV114110) associated with the A30/A303 improvement works between Honiton and Devonshire Inn.

Full description
Bluesky International, 2016, LiDAR DTM data (0.5m resolution) Blackdown Hills and East Devon AONBs: 3 transects, LIDAR ST2005 Bluesky International DTM 30-APR-2016 & 04-MAY-2016 (Cartographic). SDV359714.
The extraction pits are visible as earthworks.

Possible extraction pits of between post- medieval to 19th century date are visible as earthwork pits on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, on west facing slopes within Claypits Covert. The earthworks are irregular in shape and measure between 14m to 82m in length. Their location within Claypits Covert gives good indication as to the use of these pits. They are located in an area where numerous similar such features have been recorded during this survey and from a walkover survey carried out in 2016 (MDV114110) associated with the A30/A303 improvement works between Honiton and Devonshire Inn. The earthworks are not clearly visible on aerial photographs or other digital images made available to the survey owing to tree cover here.
