Clay pits of between post-medieval to 19th century date are visible as earthwork pits on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, to the north of Underdown Farm. The two irregular shaped earthworks measure approximately 43m in length by 18m in width (western pit) and approximately 30m in length by 21m in width (eastern pit) and are located either side of an historic field boundary. The extent of the two earthworks are partly depicted on the Parish Tithe Map of approximately 1838-48 and an ‘Old Clay Pit’ is labelled here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s. The site of an orchard is also depicted here on this map, with the orchard likely being established here following the abandonment of the clay pit. The clay pits are located in an area where numerous similar such features have been recorded during this survey and from a walkover survey carried out in 2016 (MDV114110) associated with the A30/A303 improvement works between Honiton and Devonshire Inn. The extraction pits remain visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.
