An extractive pit of probable post-medieval to 19th century date was visible as an earthwork on the higher west-facing slope of the Otter Valley, on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.
The pit is irregularly shaped, measuring up to circa 150 metres long and between 10 and 50 metres wide. The pit abuts the line of the A30 and might include access tracks from the road.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any quarry or earthwork pit depicted in this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map or the Tithe Map for Upottery. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pit had passed out of use prior to the 1840s.
The earthworks are located in an area where numerous similar features have been recorded during this survey and by a previous walkover survey carried out in 2016 in advance of A30/A303 improvement works between Honiton and Devonshire Inn. Although much more extensive, the earthworks recorded here correspond in part with a pit identified by the walkover survey, recorded as part of monument MDV114110
