An extractive pit of probable post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 as an earthwork on the higher west-facing slope of the Otter Valley, abutting the east side of the A30 north-west of Hayne Pit, Upottery parish.
The pit is roughly triangular in shape, measuring up to circa 50 metres long and 25 metres wide. The visible earthworks do not correspond with any quarry or earthwork pit depicted in this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map or the Tithe Map for Upottery. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pit had passed out of use prior to the 1840s.
The earthworks are located in an area where numerous similar features have been recorded during this survey and by a previous walkover survey carried out in 2016 in advance of A30/A303 improvement works between Honiton and Devonshire Inn.
