The remains of probable post-medieval to 19th century ridges made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage were visible as low, parallel earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data, on the north-west-facing slopes at Otter Springs, roughly 120 metres south of Hayne Farm, Upottery parish.
The banks were spaced roughly 5 metres apart and were aligned roughly cross-contour, presumably to aid drainage. The visible surviving earthworks fall within a larger area of orchard depicted as an orchard on both the Tithe map for Upottery and the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map, adjacent to a Linhay, perhaps associated with Hayne Farm. The earthworks are therefore at the latest early-19th century in date and could be significantly older. The orchard was remained lightly planted in 1947 but was largely cleared of trees in the second half of the 20th century.
