A roughly oval earthwork pit, 22 by 37 metres in plan, is visible on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 and on aerial photographs taken from 1947. It broadly corresponds to an area of trees depicted on the Tithe map, although no trees or other features are depicted in this exact location on the late-19th century mapping. It seems most likely that the earthwork is the remains of a post-medieval or early modern extraction pit that had ceased use and become scrubbed up or wooded by the mid-19th century. It is possible that in common with many similar pits in the East Devon area, the area was deliberately reused for fruit tree cultivation.
