Extraction pits of between post-medieval to 19th century date are visible as earthwork pits on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, to the west of Warren’s Cottage. The eastern of the two earthworks is oval in shape and measures approximately 32m in length by 23m in width. That to the northwest is irregular in shape, measures approximately 31m in length by 26m in width and is located within the site of a possible former orchard MDV114710. The earthworks are located in an area where numerous similar such features have been recorded during this survey and following a walkover survey carried out in 2016 associated with the A30/A303 improvement works between Honiton and Devonshire Inn. This monument has been recorded as a child record of MDV114110, which was created following this walkover survey. It includes a number of extraction pits, of which the eastern of these earthworks is one. No attempt has, however, been made to individually amend the monument polygons for this parent record. The extraction pits remain visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.
