An extraction pit of between post-medieval to 19th century date is visible as an earthwork pit on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, at Cotleigh Crossing. The irregular shaped earthwork measures approximately 86m in length by 31m in width and is located within the site of a former orchard depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map. The orchard was likely established here within the extraction pit following its abandonment. Clay pits are also depicted in the vicinity here on this map, giving good indication as to the likely function of this pit. It is located in an area where numerous similar such features have been recorded during this survey and from a walkover survey carried out in 2016 (MDV114110) associated with the A30/A303 improvement works between Honiton and Devonshire Inn. The extraction pit remains visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.
