A roughly oval earthwork pit, 32 by 78 metres in plan, is visible on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 and on aerial photographs taken from 1947 onwards. It broadly corresponds to an area of trees depicted on the Tithe map, and this same area is depicted as orchard on the late-19th century mapping. It seems most likely that the earthwork is the remains of a post-medieval or early modern extraction pit that had ceased use by the mid-19th century and in common with many similar pits in the East Devon area, was subsequently reused for fruit tree cultivation.
