Extraction pits of between post-medieval to 19th century date are visible as earthwork pits on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, to the northwest of Wellsprings Farm. The northern of the two earthworks is elongated in shape and measures approximately 44m in length by 21m in width. That to the south is semi-circular in shape and measures approximately 30m in length by 10m in width. The earthworks are situated either side of a post-medieval field boundary which appears to cut through, and so post-date, what may have been a single feature. A number of clay pits are depicted in the vicinity here on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map, which gives good indication as to the nature of these earthworks. It is also located in an area where numerous similar such features have been recorded during this survey and following a walkover survey carried out in 2016 (MDV114110) associated with the A30/A303 improvement works between Honiton and Devonshire Inn. The earthworks remain visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.
