The visible earthworks did not correspond with any depicted pit or quarry.

Former extractive pits of unknown, but probably post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in early 2016 as earthwork pits to the north-west of the A30, overlooking Claypitts Farm, Upottery parish.
Two former pits are visible in close proximity. The most clearly definable abuts the north-west edge of the A30, and is visible as an irregularly shaped shallow pit approximately 32 by 63 metres in size centred on circa ST19890510. The pit straddles the line of a former trackway, as depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, but is not itself depicted as an earthwork. The track may also be the same as that shown on the Tithe map for Upottery, a small plot adjacent to which (1629) is named on the associated apportionment as ‘Marlpit’. This possibly supports the interpretation that the earthworks were the remains of a marl pit that had passed out of use between the 1840s and 1880s. Subtle shallow earthworks continue to the west for up to 35 metres, probably indicating that the pit was probably previously more extensive than the currently open pit; this area has been transcribed as an extent of feature abutting the pit.
A second, former probable extractive pit is visible as shallow elongated earthwork circa 60 by 30 metres in size centred on circa ST19830506. This former pit is not depicted on any historic map and probably then passed out of use prior to the 1840s.
The earthworks are located in an area where numerous similar features have been recorded during this survey and by a previous walkover survey carried out in 2016 in advance of A30/A303 improvement works between Honiton and Devonshire Inn. Although the visible remains are more extensive, the earthworks recorded here correspond in part with pits identified by the walkover survey, recorded as part of monument MDV114110.
