Former extractive pits of unknown, but probably post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on aerial photographs of 2000 and digital images derived from lidar data captured in early 2016 as earthwork pits within and south of Underdown Covert, north-west of the A30, Upottery parish.
The pits are largely roughly circular to oval in size and range from circa 10 to 20 metres in diameter. An exception is a larger and more irregularly shaped pit at circa ST19820521, possibly formed of several smaller contiguous pits and small oval mounds, possibly spoil heaps. Alternatively this might be a former golf course bunker or associated earthwork, two examples of which were noted at circa ST19940517 and ST19960521 as disused but open pits, presumably associated with the neighbouring Otter Valley Golf Course, and not transcribed as part of the survey.
