Two former extractive pits of unknown, but probably post-medieval to 19th century date were visible on digital images derived from lidar data as earthwork pits on the west-facing slopes east of Claypitts Bungalow, Upottery parish.
The pits are oval or roughly circular in shape and measure circa 18 and 40 metres across. Neither is depicted on the Tithe Map for Upottery or Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition, supporting the interpretation that they had passed out of use prior to the 1840s. The function of the pit is unknown but an ‘old clay pit’ is shown on the OS First Edition about 100 metres to the north-east and a similar use is suggested for the relict earthworks.
The earthworks of the larger, southern pit are partially overlain by light tree cover, possibly the remnants of a former orchard depicted on the historic maps; the placement of orchards on former extractive pits is a recurring theme to emerge from the survey.
