Two former extractive pits of unknown, but probably post-medieval to 19th century date were visible on digital images derived from lidar data as earthwork pits either side of a spring-fed stream, on the west-facing slopes north-east of Claypitts Farm, Upottery parish.
The pits are roughly circular to sub-rectangular in shape and measured circa 10 metres in diameter. Neither was depicted on the Tithe Map for Upottery or Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition, supporting the interpretation that they had passed out of use prior to the 1840s. The function of the pits is unknown but an ‘old clay pit’ is shown on the OS First Edition about 200 metres to the north-west and, taking the name of the neighbouring farm into account, a similar use is suggested for the relict earthworks.
