Summary

A probable former extractive pit was visible on aerial photographs of 1982 onwards and digital images derived from lidar data as a roughly circular earthwork pit approximately 25 metres in diameter, on the north-west-facing slopes of the Otter Valley, north-west of Underdown Farm, Upottery parish.
The pit did not correspond with any pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map or Tithe Map for Upottery. The earthwork appeared to cut the line of a relict earthwork bank to the south-west, possibly the remains of a former field boundary of medieval origin. The possible extractive pit was therefore probably of probably post-medieval to mid-19th century date.
