Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A probable former extractive pit was visible on digital images derived from lidar data as a rectilinear earthwork pit approximately 15 metres by 40 metres in size, on the north-west-facing slopes of the Otter Valley, north-west of Underdown Farm, Upottery parish. A possible access track was visible to the south-east corner of the pit as a hollow way circa 4 metres wide and 34 metres long.
The pit did not correspond with any pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map or Tithe Map for Upottery, but the earthworks abut and respect the line of a former curvilinear field boundary immediately to the north. The possible extractive pit was therefore probably of post-medieval to mid-19th century date.
