A circular and irregularly shaped earthwork pit was visible.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

Two former extractive pits were visible on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010 and lidar data captured in 2016 as gentle earthwork hollows on the north-west-facing slopes of the Otter Valley, north-west of Underdown Farm, Upottery parish.
The southern pit was roughly circular in shape and circa 28 metres in diameter. The northernmost pit was irregular in shape and measured up to 65 metres across. Neither was depicted as an extractive pit on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition, but the northern earthwork corresponded in part with a small plot (1739) demarcated by a dotted line on the Tithe Map for Upottery and described as ‘Pit’ on the apportionments. This might support the interpretation that the pits had partly passed out of use prior to the 1840s, and completely by the 1880s.
