Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A probable former extractive pit was visible on digital images derived from lidar data as an oval earthwork pit approximately 25 metres by 35 metres in size, on the south-west-facing slopes of the Otter Valley, north-west of Mohun’s Ottery
The pit did not correspond with any pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map or Tithe Map, instead falling within a plot symbolised as a small copse or plantation. The boundary of the copse respects the edge of the earthwork, supporting the interpretation that the pit had passed out of use prior to the mid to late 19th century and that the woodland was established on the site of the disused pit; the establishment of woodland on such otherwise agriculturally marginal former extractive sites is a recurring theme noted by the survey. The earthwork remained obscured from view by dense tree cover in 2014.
