A probable former extractive pit was visible on digital images derived from lidar data as an oval earthwork pit approximately 31 metres by 22 metres in size, on the west-facing slopes of the Otter Valley, south-east of Claypitts Bungalow, Upottery parish.
The pit did not correspond with any pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map or Tithe Map for Upottery, but did appear to cut the line of a low earthwork bank, possibly a former field boundary of medieval origin, also visible on the lidar derived images. This might support the interpretation that the pit was in use no earlier than the post-medieval period and passed out of use by the mid-19th century.
