The relict earthworks fall within an area probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields.

A former field boundary was visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 as a curvilinear earthwork ditch on average circa 3 metres wide, on the west-facing slopes of the Otter Valley, south of Claypitts Farm, Upottery.
The visible earthwork corresponds partly to a boundary depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and Tithe Map for Upottery. On the latter, earlier map the boundary encloses an area depicted as an orchard. This boundary remained extant to be visible on aerial photographs of 1947 but was also removed after this date. The relict ditch extends east from this former orchard for over 100 metres.
The boundaries fall within a field pattern that has been characterised as being of late medieval origin, and have been interpreted as a former field boundary of possible late-medieval date that had been partly cleared prior to circa 1840, and partly post 1947.
