  • FIELD BOUNDARY (Early Medieval to XIX - 1066 AD to 1880 AD (Between))

Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with depicted field boundaries but trees, interpreted as former hedgerow planting, were shown along parts of their course.

Bluesky International, 2016, LiDAR DTM data (0.5m resolution) Blackdown Hills and East Devon AONBs: 3 transects, LIDAR ST1905 Bluesky International DTM 04-MAY-2016 (Cartographic). SDV359714.

A linear earthwork bank and ditch was visible.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A low linear earthwork bank and shallow earthwork ditch were visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 on the south-east facing slopes of the Otter Valley, south-east of Mohun’s Ottery, Luppitt parish.
The earthwork bank was circa 2.5 metres wide and very regular in plan, crossing the slope in a straight line for circa 160 metres. This might support an interpretation of a post-medieval date. The earthwork ditch appears to meet the bank at its lowest point, but follows the contours of the combe, defining a boundary along the west bank of the Otter. is less regular but also largely linear in plan.
Neither earthwork feature corresponds with boundaries depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, but trees are depicted along its course. These are interpreted as former hedgerow planting and support the interpretation that the relict earthworks are evidence of former field boundaries of post-medieval date that had been removed prior to circa 1880.
