A possible former post-medieval to 19th century extraction pit is visible as an earthwork pit on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, within grounds of the former manor house at Upottery. An earthwork is possibly first depicted here as an elongated shaped feature on the Parish Tithe map of approximately 1838-48. By the time of the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s, however, it appears the grounds of the former manor house (MDV48366) have been subject to various landscaping works, for example, an area of terracing (MDV114726) to the south of the house, and it appears that a feature has been made of this former extraction pit, possibly being converted into a pond. The well-defined and sharp edges of the earthwork visible on lidar images would indeed seem to support this interpretation. The earthwork is oval in shape and measures approximately 28m in length by 18m in width.
