Possible gravel pits of likely post-medieval to 19th century date are visible as earthwork pits on aerial photographs of 1947 and on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, to the southeast of Hanson’s Farm. The earthworks occupy an area of approximately 0.27 hectares of moderate northwest facing slope, on the western side of the A30. The earthworks are irregular in shape and range in size from between approximately 10m in length by 6m in width up to 33m in length by 28m in width. The largest of the earthworks to the south is partly depicted and labelled as a ‘Gravel Pit’ on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map, which gives a good indication as to the likely use of the adjacent, smaller earthworks. The earthworks are largely obscured by tree cover on aerial photographs and digital images made available to the survey.
