Possible former extraction pits of post-medieval to 19th century date are visible as earthwork pits and possible mound on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, to the west of Sandy’s Farm. The northwestern of the two pits is sub-oval in shape and measures approximately 43m in length by 29m in width. That to the immediate southeast is also sub-oval in shape and measures approximately 40m in length by 24m in width. This earthwork appears to be cut into a natural scarp, with a sub-circular mound approximately 30m in diameter on the edge of this scarp and possibly derived from the dumping of up-cast material from the extraction pit. Clay pits are depicted in the vicinity here on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Ordnance Survey map, which may give some indication as to the nature of these extraction pits. The earthworks remain visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.
