An irregular earthwork pit, up to 44 metres across three fields, is visible on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. No pits are depicted on the available historic mapping in this exact location, and it is interpreted as the remains of an extractive pit that went out of use by the mid-19th century. By the late-19th century several small rectilinear fields had been established here, including one that broadly corresponds to the extent of the pit although extending further to the west and south, which is depicted as orchard on the first edition OS mapping. It is possible that in common with many similar pits in the East Devon area, the sheltered area of the pit was deliberately exploited for fruit tree cultivation.
