An irregular earthwork pit, up to 46 metres across, is visible on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. No pits are depicted on the available historic mapping in this exact location, and it is interpreted as the remains of an extractive pit that went out of use by the mid-19th century, by which time this and the wider area seems to have been in use as orchard. By the late-19th century the orchard seems to have shrunk to the approximate extent of the pit as depicted on the first edition OS mapping. It is possible that in common with many similar pits in the East Devon area, the sheltered area of the pit was deliberately exploited and retained in use for fruit tree cultivation.
