An irregular earthwork pit, 20 by 53 metres, is visible on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 and aerial photographs taken from 1982. No pits are depicted on the available historic mapping in this exact location, and it is interpreted as the remains of an extractive pit that went out of use by the mid-19th century, by which time this area seems to have been in use as orchard. By the late-19th century no orchard is depicted in this area on the first edition OS mapping. It is possible that in common with many similar pits in the East Devon area, the sheltered area of the pit was deliberately exploited in the mid-19th century for fruit tree cultivation.
