A probable former extractive pit was visible on digital images derived from lidar data as an oval earthwork pit in excess of 30 metres wide by 60 metres long, on the north-west-facing slopes of the Otter Valley, south of Rawridge, Upottery parish.
The pit did not correspond with any pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map but may is probably the pit listed as plot 1525, depicted abutting the south edge of a field boundary slightly to the south-east, on the Tithe Map for Upottery. The visible earthwork appears to cross the line of the former boundary. This might support the interpretation that the pit was in use no earlier than the post-medieval period and passed out of use at some point between the 1840s and 1880s, possibly expanding slightly following the removal of the boundary before passing out of use.
