A probable former extractive pit of unknown, but probably post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on aerial photographs of 1982 as an earthwork pit beneath a small copse on the south-east-facing slopes of the Otter Valley, south-east of Old Spurtham Farm, Luppit parish.
The precise shape and dimensions of the pit were difficult to define due to the dense tree cover, but probably closely corresponded with the area of the woodland as depicted on the Ordnance Survey Second Edition 25 inch map, from which the area of the former earthwork has been estimated.
The woodland had been cleared and pit filled at some point between 1982 and 1999; the ground was still visibly disturbed and covered with scrub vegetation on digital images derived from aerial photographs of that year.
The woodland was presumable cleared and pit infilled to increase the area of land available for cultivation. The area of the former pit remains uncultivated on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010 and 2014, which might support the interpretation that this was not wholly successful.
