A probable former extractive pit of unknown, but probably post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and digital images derived from lidar data as an earthwork pit on the south-facing slopes of the Otter Valley, south of Old Spurtham Farm, Luppit parish. The pit can be described as ‘B-shaped’ and measures circa 70 by 50 metres in size. The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and therefore probably passed out of use by the mid-19th century.
