A probable former extractive pit was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards as an irregularly shaped earthwork pit approximately 63 by 21 metres in size on the south-west-facing slopes below Gorehayes Farm, Upottery parish.
The pit did not correspond with any pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map or Tithe Map for Upottery, but was bisected by field boundary that was shown. Whilst the surrounding field pattern has been characterised by HLC as late medieval in origin, the boundary that bisected the pit was probably of post-medieval to 19th century date. It is therefore likely that the pit was medieval or earlier in origin.
