Two irregular earthwork pits, one 66 by 41 metres and the other 22 by 14 metres, are visible on aerial photographs taken from 1947 and on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. They are not depicted on the available historic mapping; on the Tithe map several field boundaries conjoin in the location of the larger pit, although by the end of the century the Ordnance Survey does not depict any of these boundaries within this area, just a small patch of scrub and trees. This suggests that the pits may have been established after circa 1840 for extraction, and ceased use by the end of the 19th century.
