Name:Orchard Banks west of Yeatlands Farm, Axminster

Summary

Parallel linear cropmarks, visible on aerial photographs taken between 1947 and 2014, are interpreted as tree planting banks of post-medieval or 19th century date that went out of use in the second part of the 19th century. They appear to have been enclosed by a boundary bank.

Parallel linear cropmarks, circa 3 metres apart, are visible on aerial photographs taken between 1947 and 2014. Their cross-contour orientation is indicative of tree planting banks of post-medieval or 19th century date, and the area is depicted with trees on the Tithe map suggesting that it was in use as an orchard at this time. It was not mapped as orchard on the late-19th century maps suggesting that they fell out of use in the second part of the 19th century. A pale rectilinear cropmark less than 2 metres wide around the parallel cropmarks indicated that the orchard was bounded by an enclosure bank.
