This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields

A curvilinear ditch was visible as a slight earthwork and cropmark on aerial photographs of 1982, on the east-facing slopes west of Mohun’s Ottery, Luppitt parish. The ditch is visible for circa 240 metres, cut approximately 90 metres from its southern end by a former clay pit of probable post-medieval to 19th century date. The ditch falls within a field system characterised as being of medieval origin and is interpreted as field boundary of probable medieval date. The cropmark does not match any boundary shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. The boundary was therefore removed prior to circa 1880. Tithe mapping is not available for this area. It is possible the relict ditch is evidence of a former Deer Park boundary recorded by Historic England in this area.
