Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

An extensive area of irregular pitting, approximately 200 by 330 metres in extent, is visible on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. They are tentatively interpreted as the possible remains of extractive pits, although it is not clear what materials were being extracted. The ground surface is obscured by the tree canopy on the available aerial photographs, in an area depicted as mixed woodland on the 19th century maps, suggesting that extraction predated the mid-19th century. A quarry and limekiln depicted on the historic mapping immediately to the south supports this interpretation, and it is possible that the pits in the woodland are from an earlier phase of extraction.
