A probable former extractive pit was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 as a crescent shaped earthwork measuring approximately 75 by 25 metres in size on the north-west facing slopes below Hillend Farm, Luppitt parish.
The visible earthwork does not correspond with any pit features depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, but does abut a field boundary within an area depicted as an orchard. The establishment of woodland on otherwise agriculturally marginal plots such as former extractive sites is a recurring theme noted by the survey. The boundary abutted by the pit is probably of medieval origin. The earthwork was therefore probably of medieval or post-medieval date and probably passed out of use prior to the late-19th century. The pit was not clearly identifiable on the most recent images available to the survey and has probably been at least partly levelled.
