A probable former extractive pit was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards as an irregularly shaped earthwork measuring approximately 65 by 45 metres in size, on the west facing slopes of a field encroaching on Hense More, approximately 550m north-west of Hillend Farm, Luppitt parish.
The visible earthwork does not correspond with any pit features depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map or Tithe Map for Luppitt. The earthwork therefore probably passed out of use prior to the med-19th century. Due to unfavourable lighting conditions the pit was not clearly identifiable on the most recent images available to the survey, but is likely to survive as subtle earthworks. It is possible that the earthworks have been partly shaped by erosion from springs rising immediately upslope.
