A possible former extractive pit of unknown, but probably medieval to early 19th century date was visible on aerial photographs of the 1980s as a shallow earthwork pit on the west-facing slopes north of Meshayes Farm, Luppitt parish.
The earthwork was irregularly shaped and measured roughly 70 metres long and 45 metres wide. A possible pit is depicted in this approximate location on the Tithe Map for Luppitt bounded by field boundaries to the south-west and south-east. The pit was not depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map and the field boundaries had been reorganised to cross the site of the pit. The extractive pit had therefore passed out of use by circa 1880. Slight earthworks remained visible bisected by the field boundary on aerial photographs of 1947 but by 1999 the boundaries had been cleared and the site ploughed, revealing the site of the pit as a soilmark.
