Two possible former extractive pits were visible on aerial photographs of the 1980s as slight earthworks under pasture on the west-facing combe slopes above Littletown Farm, Luppitt parish.
The pits were roughly semicircular in shape, abutting opposite sides of the same field boundary. The earthworks measured approximately 23 and 30 metres across. The visible earthworks did not correspond with any pit features depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map or Tithe Map for Luppitt, although the course of the field boundary doglegs slightly at the smaller, easternmost pit, which might support the interpretation that the pit predated the boundary. The earthworks are therefore interpreted as evidence of extractive pits of probable medieval or post-medieval date that passed out of use prior to the early to mid-19th century.
Very subtle earthworks can be identified on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2014.
