A possible former extractive pit was visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards as a shallow oval earthwork pit on the west facing slopes north of Shelves Farm, Luppitt parish.
The visible earthwork, measuring approximately 20 by 70 metres in size, does not correspond with any pit features depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, but does match a small area bounded by a dashed line and depicted as an orchard. The establishment of woodland, most commonly orchards, within former extractive pits, land that otherwise might be seen as agriculturally marginal is a pattern frequently recorded by the survey.
This might support the interpretation that the earthwork was the remains of an pit of post-medieval date that had passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century and the plot planted as an orchard.
The plot has now been partially developed for housing and the former pit earthwork probably partly levelled.
