A possible former extractive pit of possible post-medieval origin was visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards as a shallow earthwork pit on the south-west facing slopes of Hartridge, north-west of Beacon village.
The earthwork was roughly D-shaped and measured approximately 35 by 20 metres in size, abutting the road between Beacon and Shelves Farm to the south, from where it was probably accessed. It was flanked to the north-west by a low mound, possibly spoil associated with the pit.
The visible earthwork did not correspond with any features depicted on the Tithe Map for Luppitt or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map. This might support the interpretation that the earthwork had passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century. The function of the pit is unknown, but a former sand pit is recorded circa 50 metres to the north and a similar use is possible for this pit.
The pit was clearly identifiable as an earthwork on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010.
