Numerous ossible former extractive pits of probable post-medieval origin were visible on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards as shallow and irregularly shaped earthwork pits on the west facing slopes of Hartridge, east of Shelf Farm.
The visible earthwork did not correspond with any features depicted on the Tithe Map for Luppitt, but might include a small pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map and annotated as an Old Gravel Pit. The pits actually extend to the south-west along the east of a track for 140 metres, and to the south-west for a further 120 metres to the west of the track, where a second Old Gravel Pit is depicted.
The pits are therefore interpreted as former gravel extraction pits that probably date from the post-medieval to 19th century, but that had probably passed out of use by the middle of the century. Although largely obscured by scrub vegetation the pits remain clearly identifiable on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010 and probably survive as earthworks.
