A possible former extractive pit of unknown, but probably post-medieval to early 19th century date was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards as a shallow earthwork pit on the south-east-facing slopes south-west of Luppitt Inn Farm, Luppitt parish.
The pit was irregularly shaped and measured approximately 75 by 30 metres in size. The visible earthwork did not correspond with any pit or quarry features depicted on the Tithe Map for Luppitt, but corresponded closely with a plot depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map. The establishment of woodland such as orchards on former extractive pits and other sites that otherwise might be seen as agriculturally marginal, has been frequently recorded by the survey.
This might support the interpretation that the extractive earthwork had passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century and was subsequently established as an orchard.
By 1947 all planting had been cleared from the site. The pit remained clearly identifiable on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010 and probably survives as an earthwork.
