This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields

A possible former field boundary was visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards as an earthwork ditch on the south-east-facing slopes west of Stoneacre Farm, Luppitt. The visible earthwork did not correspond with any boundary depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map or Tithe Map for Luppitt. The surrounding field pattern has been characterised as medieval enclosure based on strip fields. The relict earthwork appears to sub-divide a field with long curvilinear boundaries and could be evidence of post-medieval enclosure of fields based on earlier boundaries.
The earthwork is therefore interpreted as a boundary of later medieval or post-medieval date that had passed out of use prior to the mid-19th century. The former boundary remains visible as a slight earthwork ditch on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010.
