The remains of ridges made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage were visible as low, parallel earthwork banks on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010 on the south-west-facing slopes of a spur to the north-east of Newhouse Farm, Luppitt.
The banks were spaced up to approximately 6 metres apart and were visible over an area of approximately 0.3 hectares, aligned cross contour presumably to aid drainage.
The visible earthworks fell within the area of a much larger orchard depicted on the Tithe Map for Luppitt. The tree cover depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map was much less extensive and symbolised as deciduous cover, not an orchard.
The banks are therefore interpreted as the remains of orchard tree planting banks of possible post-medieval and 19th century date, made to improve soil depth and aid drainage. The orchard had passed out of use in the middle of the 19th century.
