Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The earthwork banks did not correspond with any depicted field or woodland boundaries.

Royal Air Force, 1947, RAF/CPE/UK/1974, RAF/CPE/UK/1974 RS 4300-4301 11-APR-1947 (Aerial Photograph). SDV356127.

A linear narrow earthwork bank was visible. Map object based partly on this source.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields

Next Perspectives, 2010, Aerial Photography for Great Britain, Next Perspectives APGB Imagery ST1606 4-MAY-2010 (Aerial Photograph). SDV359490.

The remains of a curvilinear former boundary were visible as a low earthwork bank. Map object based partly on this source.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

Two narrow earthwork banks were visible on aerial photographs of 1947 and digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010 as slight narrow, curvilinear and linear earthwork banks on the south-facing slopes of a ridge east of Lake Copse, Luppitt parish.
The relict earthworks fall within an enclosure pattern that has been characterised by HLC as being probably based strip fields of medieval date. The eastern boundary appears to extend a curvilinear enclosure pattern from the east, whilst the western earthwork is more regular in plan and might be a later subdivision.
The relict earthworks do not correspond with any boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Luppit and are therefore interpreted as the remains of a boundaries of medieval and possibly post-medieval origin that were removed prior to circa 1840.
