HER Number:MDV116786
Name:Enclosure to north of Common Lane, Kingskerswell

Summary

Curvilinear and linear banks of an oval enclosure of potential prehistoric or Romano-British date are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken from 1946 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. The eastern side of the enclosure appears to have been incorporated within a later field boundary which itself has now gone.

Curvilinear and linear banks, circa 8m wide, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken from 1946 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. The earthworks define the northwest and southeast sides of an oval enclosure, circa 140m long by 100m wide, which is situated on the edge of a spur. Common Lane defines and gently skirts around, so likely post-dating, the southwest edge of the enclosure and its northeast edge has been largely truncated away by later quarrying (MDV49910). To the east, three banked circuits are visible, although given that the central bank corresponds with a field boundary (MDV77186) shown on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map, it is unclear which of the earthworks are associated with the enclosure or with medieval or post-medieval land division. A linear bank which extends off the northern enclosure edge may represent an associated feature, or part of a medieval or post-medieval field boundary. The character of the enclosure supports a prehistoric or Romano-British date.
