Monument Type(s) and Dates

  • FIELD BOUNDARY (Early Medieval to XIX - 1066 AD? to 1890 AD (Between))

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The earthwork might correspond with a short section of depicted field boundary.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthwork did not correspond with any depicted boundary.

Royal Air Force, 1947, RAF/CPE/UK/1974, RAF/CPE/UK/1974 RS 2301 11-APR-1947 (Aerial Photograph). SDV356127.

Linear earthwork banks were visible.

Ordnance Survey, 1982, OS/82219 V, OS/82219 V 1628-1629 03-SEP-1982 (Aerial Photograph). SDV357675.

The linear banks had been largely levelled, with some sections possibly surviving as very low earthworks.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A possible field boundary potentially of medieval date was visible as a linear earthwork bank approximately 2 metres wide on the west-facing slopes north-west of Holmwood Farm on aerial photographs of 1947. A second, narrower boundary bank was visible offset to the south from the first, defining a possible trackway circa 1.5 metres wide. The banks do not correspond with any boundaries depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map, and might be truncated by a very regular boundary probably of 19th century date. A fragment of boundary was depicted in this approximate location on the edge of the Bywood Estate portion of the Tithe Map for Dunkeswell. This might support the interpretation that the earthwork banks were evidence of a boundary incorporating a route of pre 19th century, possibly medieval date that was cleared between circa 1840 and 1890. The earthworks had been largely cleared and levelled by 1982.
