A possible enclosure was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 to the 1982 as a rectangular platform in the floodplain of the Madford River, approximately 80 by 70 metres in size and defined by a low earthwork bank, approximately 400 metres north-west of Holmwood Farm, Dunkeswell parish. The earthwork does not correspond with any enclosure depicted on the Tithe Map for Dunkeswell or the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map, but it does appear to incorporate a section of footpath or trackway which is depicted on the OS First Edition map at its south-west corner, possibly for access. This might support the interpretation that the enclosure post-dated circa 1890, and might have been created to inclose and improve a section of the previously rough ground for agricultural purposes. This might be supported by the subsequent levelling of the earthwork, appearance of widespread improved pasture and possible drainage earthworks visible as low banks across this area on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2014.
